Garrett’s Favorite and Most hated films of 09’

Another year another one of my year-end reviews. (Late I know…but I got really lazy after Christmas.) See I can’t really call this a best and worst film list b/c some things I liked others down right loathed and some things I hate others call classics. In retrospect Hollywood put out a lot of mediocre films this year falling in between crap and awesome. Most of my fav films I saw I picked up blind when they were released on Bluray. Some of them didn’t even come out this year.

Top films and in no particular order.

Boondock Saints 2-I had to drive to a different city just to see it. Totally worthy sequel!
The Box-From the writer of I Am Legend (the book) and director of Donnie Darko you get a think piece that will leave you talking about it long after seeing it.
District 9-One of the top films of the summer! As my parents said after seeing it ‘Different’. Being original in an unoriginal world is hard to come by.
Drag Me to Hell-Sam Rami is back!
Fanboys-If the Weinstein’s were smart they wouldn’t have sat on this for years. If they released it they could’ve made some coin.
Trick R Treat-The best horror anthology in years. Once again if studio dickheads would’ve release it they could’ve made some buck.
I love you Beth Cooper-Reminiscent of 80’s John Hughes.
Jennifer’s Body-This years future cult classic.
Law Abiding Citizen-Monte Cristo meets Prison Break need I say more.
In Search of a midnight kiss- a black and white indie romance from the producer of Before Sunset.
Perfect Getaway-Not overly great but Timothy Olyphant is just badass here.
Paranormal Activity-If I saw this when I was 7 I wouldn’t be able to sleep for a month. For my age now it was just plain cool.
17 again-Don’t let the fact that it starts Zac Efron throw you off. This film is hilarious and his friend is the coolest geek ever!
Star trek-My fav movie of the summer blockbusters.
Taken-Don’t fuck with Liam Neeson
Zombieland-Zombie comedy fun that surprisingly the masses loved as well.
What Love is- A comedy about relationships from the guy who did Poolhall Junkies.
Ben X- a Belgium film about a bullied kid who’s into online gaming.
Choke-a black comedy from the writer of Fight Club.
Fired Up-FU
500 Days of Summer-an actual realistic approach to relationships instead of your typical Hollywood stuff.
The Road-Bleakily awesome

Worst Films-There is probably more films that are worse than these but I don’t plan on seeing shitty films on purpose.

Fighting-I’d liked it better when it was called Lionheart and stared Jean Claude Van Damm
The Final Destination-or in other words a remake of the one before it, which was a remake of the one before that, which was a remake of the one before that.
Gamer-You have a cool premise, the writers and director of the outlandish Crank series and Gerard Butler and we end up with shite.
Men who stare at goats-Love the story behind it and had some take away quotes, but it probably would’ve been better in the hands of the Coens
Up –Well I think I’m the only one out there who didn’t like this one. It is also a surprisingly very dark film.
Night at the Museum 2-I hated the first one and still went to it. I though it could have so much more potential when you could play around with stuff at the smithosian. Man was I wrong.
Push-Snooze fest.
Saw 6-I was with them all the way up to 5 and now they are reaching at straws.
Street Fighter-Most years I don’t have an all time hated film but this one is it. It makes the 94 version look like an academy award winner.
Underworld 3-Pointless
Halloween 2-Good for Rob for doing his own thing but damn
Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant-garbage…and now we’ll never see any of the other book’s adapted, oh darn (this is sarcasm)
GI Joe-My childhood has been raped!
Paul Blart-Was this movie suppose to be funny.
Avatar-The story was Avatared.

Garrett's Cold Remedy

Seems like more people than usual are getting sick this year, so I thought I'd share my cold remedy that will get you back on your feet in no time. As far back as I can remember I would get at least one and sometimes 2 or 3 really bad colds a year. Of course that never stopped me from going to school or work. However now a days I get sick days so to hell with this going to work sick...Well that's a lie I'll still go to work but if it's really bad I'll leave half way. Anyways the trick is a mix of things. Before you get sick there are a couple of things you can do to prevent it. Number 1 constantly wash your hands. Yes it really is that simple and you hear it all the time. Well take it from me and listen to it. From there it's a mental game. If you think to yourself "I'm not going to get sick" you probably wont. Positive thinking is key. If those don't work and you wind up getting sick follow these next two steps. They say drink lots of fluids...Try this concoction next time: Orange Juice, 7-up or Ginger Ale and Vodka. I know what your thinking but it does work. My theory is your getting you vitamin C from the Orange Juice, the bubbly soda is good for upset stomachs and the alcohol kills germs. Sounds all logical to me. And if it doesn't work as long as you drink enough you'll be too drunk to care about being sick. And if all else fails pill popping is the way to go. Down lots of DayQuil and NyQuil or Contact C, but here's the trick. Take one more than the recommended dosage. If it says take 1 or 2 every 4 hours take 3. This way you know when it's working ;) Just don't over do the daily recommended dosage. I'm assuming this would probably kill you. Follow these proven steps and you can prevent colds before they take hold or when it does you'll be right as rain in no time.

On a side note I'm not recommending drinking OJ, Sev, and Vodka every day to prevent colds from ever happening. This could lead to alcoholism and I don't have a cure for that one yet.

Freaky

Okay I have a freaky little tale for all my loyal readers out there.... My oldest brother and his family are visiting this week. The day they get here my brother makes a stop at Dairy Queen. When he gets home he asks me if I've been to DQ lately and donated to whatever fundraiser they are currently collecting money for. It's one of those fundraisers where if you donate a buck or something and you get a pic of a hot air balloon and sign your name on it and they post them all over the store. I'm thinking it's an odd question b/c I probably haven't been there in like 6 months. He goes on to tell me that someone has donated money and signed my name. I'm of course thinking yeah right, haha whatever. My name my not be generic but other people do share this name. Then by chance a few days later I just so happen to find myself in this DQ while killing some time before a movie. I think to myself hey I should try to locate this signature. Of course there is like hundreds of then so I didn't really think I would actually find it, but low and behold there it was. My name in exactly the same cursive as if it were of my own hand, I couldn't believe it. Your probably thinking I got drunk one night and on my drinking binge stopped by DQ for blizzard. I wish that were true. And if during my migraines this week I actually split into some different persona I think my family would have confronted me about this, haha. However in that case I guess I really wouldn't have signed my real name. Maybe I've invented time travel or alternate realities are starting to bleed together. Either way this is some freaky shit!

Parasailing

Finally after years of saying I was going to go parasailing I've completed this task. Every time I've wanted to go there has been one reason or another why I couldn't. In most cases it was due to weather or not being able to match up schedules with my friends to go. I finally booked some time off to get this done unfortunately I was unable to match schedules with my friends. However my youngest brother tagged along and even if he backed out I don't think that would've stopped me. Of course what has to happen for the start of my vacation...a fire in Kelowna. I was thinking that this was going to kill my plans, so my back up was to go sea dooing just outside Kelowna. Lucky for me the fire didn't hinder my plans. I really thought my plans would be wrecked again so I had it on the brain to go sea dooing and since my brother has never been we did that as well. On the down side I got way too much sun by the time we went so I was feeling a little nauseous. It was a pretty good value, only $95 to go tandem for about 10-15 minutes or so up in the air. Plus for only $12 they take pictures, which I though was a great value b/c what you are really doing is buying a 512mb memory card. They take the pictures on the card and you keep it. To be honest after skydiving it was sort of a let down. Don't get me wrong I had fun and it was a peaceful flight, but it fails in comparison after gliding down to the ground after skydiving. As I said this was something I've wanted to do for a while way before I wanted to go skydiving. It was actually my lead up idea to skydiving. When you come back down you have the option for a dry landing or wet landing, and if you were outside that day you wanted to be soaked really good. Now that this is done I'm starting to run out of cool new things to try...However yesterday I did think up one new venture I want to get into and that's archery. Maybe Sagittariians are naturals at it ;)

3D Gaming

There's a sweet new toy on the market! It's a NVIDIA GeForce 3D Vision Kit. So what is this exactly? It's a device that allows you to upgrade your PC to a fully immersive stereoscopic 3D gaming experience. Totally gimmicky, but so cool! We were setting one up today to demo in store. My computer guys were still working on getting a game loaded by the time I left so I didn't get to try out a full game. However I did get to put on the 3D glasses and try it out on a few still images of games and it is so bad ass! Now why can't they do this for DVD's as well! Probably b/c it's $300. In a dream world I'll get a free copy at my conference in September! It's definitely a cool demo to check out.

Daybreakers

I'm back to share my love of movies and music. This time around it's for Ethan Hawke's new movie Daybreakers. This is one of those films I've been waiting to see for some time now. It was shot back in 07 and is finally being released in Jan next year. It's from the Spierig Brothers, the guys who gave us the Australian zombie film Undead. It's been a while since I've seen that one so I can't recall whether I liked it or not. I'll be checking it out again closer to the release. The plot summary from IMDB is "In the year 2019, a plague has transformed most every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind". It's a Vampire film , stars Ethan Hawke, and the effects are done by WETA so I'm sold. The trailer just came out a few weeks back. So there's my first love and the second can be found put to good use in the last half of the trailer. They use Placebo's cover of Kate Bush's song 'Running Up That Hill'. What's great about the song is the beginning sounds a lot like a score from a John Carpenter film. Here's a link to check it out for yourself.

The Living Dead

My friend has brought to my attention a book that he thought I might be interested in. It's called 'The Living Dead' and is a collection of Zombie short stories from some of the top writers in scifi, fantasy and horror including Stephen King, Clive Barker, and Neil Gaiman. One particular story that he said I would be interested in reading is 'Bobby Conroy Comes Back from the Dead' by Joe Hill. It doesn't feature any real zombies, but is a love story about two former lovers who are extras during the making of the original Dawn of the Dead. Obviously this one in particular is a must read for me. I haven't picked up the book yet, but I did seek out this story to read online. It wasn't anything really great but it did have a big cool factor for me. I've been pretty bad when it comes to reading novels latly. I tend to start them and it takes me too long to finish but these are short enough that I think I'll have to pick it up. If your interesting in reading the Joe Hill story here is the link.

John Connor

After doing some walking in the park today for Relay for Life I decided to stop by Walmart. While in Walmart I decide to stop in the toy isle (Maybe the inner child isn't dead inside me. I guess that means that 'Up' really did suck). There on the shelf is toys for Terminator Salvation. Usually when a toy line comes out for a movie they really don't share a resemblance to the actors. Unless of course they are made by Mezco, Neca, or McFarlane, however in that case those toys are more for the collectors anyways and not little kids. So I pick up the Marcus character and no surprise doesn't really look anything like Sam Worthington. I check out the back of the box just to see what else they released for the toy line and all there were was different types of Terminators. Then I see on the self they actually made a John Connor figure, but they don't promote it on the box. When I saw the figure I just had to laugh. They didn't even try with this one. I'm included a pic here to show you what I mean. I guess their though process was place an army guy in a box and slap the name John Conner on the box and it will sell. Well it worked b/c I picked it up...haha j/k. I don't even recall a moment in the film where his face is even covered.

The Surrogates

Attached to the beginning of The Hangover there was a trailer for Bruce Willis' new film called The Surrogates. It's set in the future where humans live in isolation from one another and only interact through robotic bodies that serve as surrogates. Several humans are murdered when there surrogates are destroyed and it's up to a cop to investigate the murders with his own surrogate. However his surrogate gets destroyed forcing him to come out of his isolation to investigate the crimes. I think that sounds pretty cool and the trailer looks sweet. Turns out it was based on a graphic novel, and a sequel is coming out this year. I might have to pick this one up in comic form before seeing the movie. The movie comes out September 25th, here is a link to the trailer.

Werewolf

When I was 5 there was this really scary TV show called Werewolf. At least it was scary to me at the time...I said I was 5. It was about a guy who gets bitten by a werewolf. In order to escape his curse he must find and kill the leader of the clan who bit him. The series focused on tracking down the clan leader, keeping from killing innocent people due to his curse, and staying away from the people who are trying to kill him due to his werewolf nature. It only lasted one season and I don't really remember too much about the show except the opening and the guy had a pentagram scar on his hand. I've always wanted to see it again, and luckily it will be coming to DVD September 1st. Hopefully it turns out to be a sweet show. It has a sweet premise and one of the best parts is the effects were done by Rick Baker. The bad-ass effects maker who just so happened to do the werewolf effects on American Werewolf in London, Thriller, Howling, and the upcoming Wolf-Man remake. The man knows his shit.

Movie Shirts

I just found this cool website 'Found Item Clothing' where you can order t-shirts that characters from 80's movies have worn in their films. What's super awesome is they have 4 different shirts that Chris Knight (Val Kilmer) wore in the film Real Genius, which just so happens to be my second my favorite movie of all time! Oh Joy...I've always wanted to have an 'I love Toxic Waste' shirt, as well as the 'Internation Order of Gorillas' one. I think I'm also going to have to go with the Rad Racing one. My youngest brother picked one of those up a couple years back from a different site.

Did you ever wonder....

Did you ever wonder what happened to the kid from Walt Disney's Flight of the Navigator? Or if perhaps that one doesn't ring a bell...so how about Runaway, or I-man? All were three awesome sci-fi films from my youth, staring child actor Joey Kramer. The biggest of course being Flight of the Navigator and if none of those ring a bell well the rest of this post wont be of any interest. If you search IMDB you don't really come up with a solid answer as to what happened to him. One person claims he took his life, and another claims he's a teacher with a wife and kid. Well I actually know what happened to him. And how might I be privy to such information. I just so happen to work with his half-brother. How cool is that!! He's hopefully coming to town this weekend so I might actually get to meet the Navigator himself. It would be pretty freakin cool to get him to autograph my Flight of the Navigator DVD. I found out that I was working with the Navigators brother from a fellow coworker. She knew I was a huge movie buff so she told me all about it. My fellow coworkers were either too young when the film came out to know anything about it, or didn't believe him. I believed him right away. First off if your going to claim your the brother of a former child star you'd have to be pretty creative to pull his name out of a hat. Sure I may have had some doubts but there are two tid bits of information I was able to pull from IMDB that would support his claim. First, Joey was born in BC. So there's my first tell tale sign. Second, one other fan was able to snap one clear picture of himself and Joey when he worked at a Source for Sports. The pic has the fan holding a copy of Flight of the Navigator and you can see his name on his name tag. Plus I can tell from the pic that he is definitely related to my coworker. I told my coworker I found a pic of his brother online and showed it two him, he said that was him when he worked at a sporting goods store. I'm not going to be one of those people to share what he's been up to all those years, b/c I personally feel it's not my place to say. I've told his brother he should go around and do Sci-fi conventions. All three of his movies that I'm personally familiar with were all Sci-fi. I feel people would love to meet him and get his autograph. Hell, they were charging $20 an autograph at the comic convention I went to for Ando from Heroes and the Voice of General Grievous. I wasn't about to drop $20 to get an Ando autograph (still cool to see him in person though), but I sure as hell would pay that to meet and gets the Navigator's autograph.

Retro Rock Trivia

So I'll spring board off my brothers question weather or not I'm the second coming or just him and haven't aged in regard to kicking ass at music trivia. I can go off on many different stories off this one... Okay so my oldest brother when he was around my age would go to retro rock trivia night at a pub and always come out on top. After my movie knowledge I would consider music to be my second close passion. I even took a Rock and Roll Philosophy course in college. Now that I think about I think I pulled my best grade in college out of that course. I would have taken a similar movie course if only it was offered during my time. Just like movies I like all genres of music...well maybe not all but I can appreciate them all on some level. You certainly won't see me blaring country from my car speakers any time soon.

So how did I obtain all my musical knowledge? Well it sure as hell wasn’t from my parents. Have you ever perused your parent’s record collection? Fun, eh…but if you ever looked through my parents collection you’d find that it does have some awesome ones but by and large it has a lot of not so great ones. I say peruse their collection but I bet some of you have just stolen their collections and claimed it for yourselves. My brothers don’t know this yet but that sure as hell is at least my plan, lol. However at least two of then will probably end up reading this so I guess it’s no longer a secret plan. They will probably think to themselves why the hell should I get it. Two reason really, First b/c the next thing I’m investing in is a USB turntable. That’s right I going to transfer some of these records straight to my computer. That’s my next pet project although I should really finish my Europe scrapbook, however I can easily do both at the same time…ah genius thinking. Plus I plan on using the LP covers as art. That’s right…you can actually buy frames to display album covers. That’s totally going to be the décor of my house along with movie posters. It’s a little gay but I actually can’t wait to design the look of my place. But now that I think about the one area they did help in was an appreciation for the old 50’s and 60’s tunes. Both my parents enjoy listening to AM radio so whenever I was chauffeured around as a child I would be hearing the golden oldies.

I would say that a big part of my knowledge and love for music came from my oldest brother. He is six years older than me so when you’re young you look up at the older brother and want to be like him. Therefore whatever he likes you like too. Come to think about trying to be like your older brother is a stupid idea or at least it is for me. My parents are always saying and even to this day “oh your just like Dylan” or when I say or do something it’s “that’s such a Dylan”. Screw off! …Who the hell am I then! When my brother does certain things thing I think to myself that’s a ‘me’ he’s doing not the other way around. Plus my parents are always calling my one of my brothers names. What the hell is with that? Do I not exist? I think therefore I am damn it! So I think, okay I’ll grow my hair long, get a tattoo, grow the goatee, live an exciting life in travel and adventure that you’d think I’d have enough different things going on for myself that my parents would get my name right….NO! Okay I think I’ve gotten off topic here, but these types of posts are a fantastic idea for something to look back on if I ever develop Alzheimer’s disease or amnesia. Where was I…Oh yes, so not only would my oldest brother buy the current stuff he would also go back and buy the old stuff as well, such as The Doors and Jimi Hendrix. Then it became my brothers tape and CD collections that I would peruse and steal for a limited time before they realized it was missing and kicked my ass. Geeze some brothers eh? Plus instead of the parents chauffeuring you around b/c it’s so lame at that age, it becomes your oldest brothers and you get to listen to the CD’s or tapes that they blast in the car.

So that’s one part of my musical education. Another one comes from my enjoyment of watching documentaries regarding the history of music. Usually every weekend you can find such a program on Much More Music. Some of my favourites have been VH1’s 100 most shocking moments in rock and roll history, and the Metal Years (not sure if that’s what it was called but it was a 4 part documentary covering each decade of metal). The next two are a little bit more comical. Back in the day when music video’s were the new thing my brother would tape a full tape of music video’s from the 80’s on the old Betamax. Yeah my parents picked wrong in that format war, haha. I actually still have a working Beta machine. My parents were going to throw it out a few years ago but I couldn’t bare to part with it even though it wasn’t working anymore however I was actually able to restore it to working condition. Not that it really matters, I think just about everything that we had on Beta I now own on DVD but there are certain things such as old 80’s TV specials and the music video’s that you just can’t replace. Back when the music video’s were taped I was more into cartoons, but it was something I discovered a few years later as I was gaining a love for movies. I would watch old 80’s movies (well old now, current at the time) mixed with old music video’s from Duran Duran and Michael Jackson. So I’ve pretty much covered how I know my music from the 80’s and 90’s and gained a partial knowledge of music that came out before I was born. So how did I pick up my music knowledge from even earlier eras…Infomercials! That’s right those old late night CD commercials that would come on after midnight promoting the best of the 50’s, 60’s or 70’s. I would stay up all night and watch those as a kid. Well I wouldn’t stay up b/c of them. At that age I was a real night owl and stay up to all hours of the morning but I didn’t have my own VCR back then and nothing is good on TV at those hours of the night/morning. You can actually pick up quiet a lot from those commercials.

Okay so there you have it …a more or less simplified version of how I gained all my musical knowledge. So back to the music trivia some friends from work wanted me to join them for music trivia. It’s probably been like six years since I played some sort of trivia in a pub. The last time it was movie trivia, I would go out with my second oldest brother and his friends. The down side back then was I didn’t drink…at all. Great for the brother and friends b/c our winnings or I should say my winnings would pay for their drinks. I still had an awesome time though back then. It gave me a chance to hang out with my second oldest brother, which hadn’t happened since our gaming days. It did get boring though winning all the time plus I’m sure others really hated playing against me. Now I’m more of a social drinker so at least I can take advantage of my teams winnings. The team we were up against last week were in for a shock when my team showed up. On my team I was playing with two other hot shots like myself. If I didn’t know the answer one of them would and visa versa. The other team didn’t know what hit them and they were the group that would go every week and win. Well their winning streak is over…The funny thing is their team was made up of people more or less the same age as myself. They did a great job on the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s but totally bombed the 90’s how is that even possible, that’s there generation of music. Plus they were no match for my Michael Jackson impersonation, lol.

Q &A With Garrett

What a smart/lame idea for a post, which could potentially backfire making it even that more funny for my readers. So as I’m watching ‘A Threeevening With Kevin Smith’ and talking with Julie today I think to myself, I could do that. For those of you who don’t know ‘An Evening with Kevin Smith’ is a series of movies Kevin Smith does where he goes on college tours and lets fans ask him questions. He answers even the most basic questions with really in-depth funny and candid stories. I’m not saying I have anything interesting to say (well that’s a lie) but I might have some stupid/funny/sad stories to share for those interested. Why anyone would really be interesting I’m not sure but I have nothing else really pressing to do right now. The only down side is I have to resort to typing it out, so it won’t have that spin I can throw on it if you were hearing it in person, but it does give me more time to think about it. I know Julie has some questions lined up (the other reason I suppose making this worth while), just please go easy on me Julie! So if you’ve ever wanted to know my thoughts on a random subject or something you’ve always wanted to know about me, go ahead ask and I’ll tell you no lie. I just won’t answer in that case, HA!

Battle Of Bishop.

So in my previous post I was mentioning a movie from my youth called 'Nightmares'. It's a horror anthology movie with 4 segments. I first saw it on A&E back in the day when they used to air really sweet cult classic movies, such as Repo Man. On a side note they once aired this one horror movie during a Sunday afternoon and it was so violent that I thought they had aired it by mistake b/c what they showed would have been cut for broadcast. Plus this was back in the day when no channel would dare play any movie uncut. The only scene I can remember from that film was a girl getting pulled through the middle of a staircase by some crazed psycho that was after the group of teens. Her friends tried to pull her back up but all they got was the top part of her torso. It was so gruesomely awesome. My challenge is to one day find this film. Anyways back on track here...Nightmares. A sweet horror anthology film that I'm trying to find on DVD but it's been out of print for years and goes for some hefty prices online. One day I'll get it. So one of the segments was called Battle Of Bishop with Emilio Estevez. He plays a gamer who becomes so good at a video game, that the game comes to life to collect him. It was a pretty sweet story. I think it and Repo Man were the two actually films that introduced me to some classic punk music. Every time he plays the game he puts on his walkman and blasts his punk music. Well anyways the point of the post was after talking about the film yesterday I felt like seeing the trailer for the film. So I go on youtube and check out the trailer and someone has actually posted the Battle of Bishop segment in 3 parts for people to watch. I made myself a new G-Mix CD the other day and thought I share my track listings.

1. Fear-I don’t Care About You
I had two minutes left worth of space so I threw this one on. I don’t like space going to waste and it clocks in at a minute 50. Normally I throw such as space filler at the end but this song fits nicely as an opener to the first half of the CD. It’s got a great chorus to the song-I don’t care about you-FUCK YOU! Perfect song to sing aloud to, lol. The first time I heard this song I think was I elementary school. It was part of a horror anthology movie that I saw on A&E called Nightmares. It was a sweet movie that I’ve been trying to find on DVD for years but it’s been out of print and copies of it go for like $100. They played it during the one entitled 'Bishop of Battle', where a teenager (Emilio Estevez) becomes so good at a video game, that the game comes to life to collect him. Hopefully I find a copy some day or they will re-release it. A&E used to play some super wicked shows back in the day. I wished they'd return to those.

When I heard JA’s ‘Whores’ I was like that’s been released before I have it. Yeah, I was wrong partially. Every version I have of it is live. This is the first time it’s a studio recording. I also learned something very interesting about the band Street Sweeper. I was like who the hell are they. I go to their web page and find out it’s Tom Morello’s (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave) new band with Boots Riley of The Coup. Their genre is rap rock. Their two songs were pretty good. I may have to pick up their album when they release one this year.

8. One Day as a Lion-Wild International
Did you ever wonder what Zack de la Rocha from Rage Against the Machine was up to? Well this is what he has been doing. And yes I am well aware that I put two songs back to back from Rage members.

9. My Chemical Romance-Desolation Row
Not a fan of the band but it’s from Watchmen, plus it’s a Bob Dylan song.

12. 3 Doors Down- She Don't Want the World
Now we start to mellow out the CD. I could see this song used in a slow motion movie montage love/dream scene. Theres this chime in one part of the song which is sort of hypnotic. First time I heard the song I put it on repeat for like an hour. It’s a very calming song.

13.Kelly Clarkson-All I ever wanted
Can you spot the guilty pleasure song ;) I actually like Kelly Clarkson she has had some good hits. I just hope she never goes the trashy route to sell albums like other starlets. I was playing the album in store and this song just has a really good beat.

Yeah! New stuff from Third Eye Blind! I’ve been waiting 6 years for this. To me their lyrics are really poetic. This is all the leaked stuff I could find. I can’t wait to pick up their new CD.

Palm/Tarot Card Reading

I finally went to one of those fair’s that comes around every year…it only took me 15 or so years. And like every good fair there is a fortuneteller, which I always thought would be cool to get an official one done. I say official b/c my ex-girlfriend was into tarot cards and she was pretty good at it. However it wasn’t part of the fair that I first sought out. I really only did it b/c a friend of mine was getting theirs done and I’m really glad I did! I do actually believe in that stuff. I know by getting one done you hear what you want to hear. Plus without yourself consciously being aware of it you probably drop hints to things but you tend to ignore that b/c of the information she is telling you. Speaking of which, haven’t you noticed that all fortunetellers are women. So for the low, low price of $30 I was able to get my tarot reading and palm read. So the things that stuck with me out of the tarot reading. First off there is always a spirit that comes with the cards. Mine was an old man who looks out for me. Which I thought was cool b/c I feel like at times I’m an old soul. Also from the cards I’m close with my mom and I should listen to her. Yeah that’s all I need to hear, lol ;) Also my dad is there for me. I will be doing some traveling and will be seeing lakes and mountains. The funny thing is she said it wouldn’t be hard living in BC. Then one of the cards said I would be crossing a boarder. I just so happen on planning to be go on vacation in late summer down the west coast into California. She also got from the cards that I’m very lucky, which is really true with my family. The whole lot of us are really lucky people. She asked me what I did for a living and she said things are looking good. She told me I was just starting out and that I would be successful. It would also lead me to bigger better things. As for the love life she told me I’ve been hurt, but who hasn’t right ;) The next person who comes along won’t hurt me, and she will be someone I can trust. The next part is the damn thing. She asked me if anyone close to me has died recently. No one ever close to me has died, (but I never let that one slip to her). She went on to tell me someone close to me is going to die in 3 days, 3 weeks or 3 months. It’s going to be sudden. It’s not going to be my Mom or Dad, she’s not sure who. She told me (don’t quote me on these words) I’m going to be disappointed but will get over it quickly. Now that is some freaky shit. This could mean I may lose either my grandma or grandpa, soon. I don’t want to sound like a cold bastard but that’s exactly how I feel I’d take the news of there passing. So at least that’s more or less what I could remember from the tarot cards. Then for my palm reading…I going to live to an old age somewhere into my 80’s… Sweet! Time to take living life to the edge! At least more than I already have, haha. The way that two of the lines meet in my palm show that I don’t make decisions hastily, I think things through. The woman I’m meant to be with will be the next woman to come my way. I guess these last two things could come together. I don’t see myself dating someone unless I see a possible future for the two of us. Were going to grow old together, and have two kids. I’m also going to have to have a lot of grandchildren. As far as career I going to be well off financially and successful and may even have my own business. She couldn’t tell me of any illnesses coming my way b/c my palm told her I was healthy. Good to know all that fast food hasn’t had any affect on me yet, haha. At least that’s what I can remember to the point of putting in a clear somewhat legible post. True or not for any of that stuff it feels good to hear it, especially the love stuff ;). I can’t help it I’m a hopeless romantic, no matter how much I probably deny it around people. Although the death stuff did suck. However now that I’ve heard all of this I can easily make it fall into one of those selfulfilling prophecies ;) On a side note I always thought tarot card tattoos on my thigh would be a cool idea. May still get one if any of this stuff proves true!

What Love Is

How the fuck do I know...If I knew anything about love I'd be out there making it instead of talking to you people...lol. No, I'm refering to the Mars Callahan film. Who is that you ask? The writer, director, and star of the the cult hit Poolhall Junkies. If you've never seen that one your missing out. Poolhall Junkies is an uber cool film. I'll leave it at that considering I think I've made a previous post on that film. I feel compeled to describe my love for this film, partly b/c I feel it has been given a bad rap on IMDB. It only got a 4.7 out of ten, however only 534 people actually voted on it. I personally give it a 5 out of 5, and it's also now on my extensive list of favorite films of all time. As I said on facebook it's one of those rare films that I'd hold screening of just so I could show my friends. The film star Cuba Gooding Jr, Matthew Lillard, Mars Callahan, Gina Gershon, Anne Heche, and Sean Astin. It came out in 07 and was released on DVD at the begining of last year, but I never saw bit until last week. I've always wanted to and it was on the top of my list for films to find when I was in the States. Here's the plot from IMDB

Tom (Cuba) plans to surprise Sara with an engagement ring, and he's asked his four best friends to witness the popping of the question at his place on Valentine's night. Trouble is Sara's left him a "Dear John" letter and will be by soon for her suitcases; plus, thinking it's a party, Tom's friend Sal has invited five women who were at his bar to come too. First the men talk - about women, sex, love, and homophobia (Tom's pals include a happily married guy, a gay man newly engaged, a metrosexual, and Sal, an inveterate player). Then the women arrive and argue in the loo about men and sex before joining the boys for talk, alcohol, and hookups.

I'm posting a trailer here for the film but in my mind it's a really shitty trailer, so don't base the film on that alone. I thought the film was funny, serious, and had great viewpoints on the topic from both male and female. First they give the male views, then the females views, then they come together at the end. It's a think piece and covers the topic from what seems like all angles. The film has some really sweet monologues (and that's sweet as in awesome not sweet as in cute)(and yes I realize I could have just used awesome and saved my time explaining it but then it's not as funny, HA!). The film also would have worked brilliantly as a stage play, and if I had actually gotten into acting this is one I'd tour around. Here's just one of the funny monoluges from Cuba. If you not around whenever I hold my own screening for it about were interested in a film on the subject you should check it out sometime.

There is No Pirates of the Caribbean 4!

Aren’t idiot customers grand! So today I got into a verbal fight with a customer. This is how it all played out…An older guy probably in his mid 50’s comes into my department and asks if we have a copy of Pirates of the Caribbean 4. Obviously if you know anything, it doesn’t exist. You’d think the conversation would end there but Noooooo! The guy comes out and tells me yes they do…me…Movie God, that alone is funny. This guy certain didn’t know whom he was messing with. It would be like telling me I was Asian. I once again told him that no they only ever made three movies in the series. Telling him that a fourth one is in the works would just complicate things at this point. He then comes back at me with, yes they do have a fourth film they were playing it at Sears. I told him they are playing number 3. I know this b/c they have been playing it ever since it came out on bluray, plus they never made a fourth flipping Pirates! He then tells me again no it wasn’t the 3rd one it’s the fourth. Every time he speaks he keeps getting madder at me. Then I asked him what scene they were showing. He explained the scene as one from the third film. I asked him if he owned any of the other films. He tells me he owns all the other ones and knows it’s not a scene from any of the previous films. Then his plays the Disney card on me. He was in Disney last week and supposedly this can explain a fourth film in the series. He was sort of getting irate with me, so being the bigger man I just dropped it and played dumb. I told him that we didn’t carry it, but good luck finding it… jerkoff. He told me he was going to swing by Sears again. What I would have loved to see was him come back and apologise for being an asshole. Or even better I should have told the customer I’d call Sears on his behave and get them to check what they were playing. The look on the customer’s idiot face would have been priceless.

Exile

I can thank my younger brother for finding this one. Back in the very early 90's ABC used to air some sweet Disney made for TV movies. One of those happen to be a film called Exile. It was about a group of teens on a study program abroad who have to learn survival techniques when they crash on an uncharted Malaysian island. It's started Cory Feldmen among other teen actors who probably I could only recognize. I remember really loving this show and have been looking for a copy of it everywhere. However it was never release on video, making things that more challenging. Until today that is...My brother found that someone had posted it on Youtube in 10 minute segments. So my plan for the night is going to be checking this out. It's been 19 yrs since I've seen it hopefully it's as good as I remember. Here's the link if you want to check it out sometime.

Watchmen

Well it’s been a while since I’ve done an in-depth movie review on my blog. Now a days it’s just it’s my rating on Facebook with a one or two line quote about the film. So I thought I would go back to my roots and do a full one for all my fans out there. I’m also being very liberal with the pluralisation of the word fan. Before I get into the review I’m going over non Watchmen related stuff, so if all you want to do is read my thoughts on the film skip to the bottom part. The first part is just me rambling on so you've been been forewarned.

So I think I may have discovered my niche for reviewing films. Actually it was one of my coworkers whose pointed it out to me. He thinks I should review films, which is something he himself used to do for some type of paper. It’s really something I just prefer to do for fun. I personally hate film critics, plus I think I’m a horrible writer. However I have had people comment differently on my writing. Maybe all pro writers suck and that’s why they have editors, HA. What I seem to be good at is being able to recommend films that I think others may enjoy. I watch all types of films. Some are great and others horrible, but even some of those horrible films I may like for some reason or another. Then there are the horrible films, which are truly horrible (cough ‘Fog remake’ cough). I can at least recognize what is good and bad. I may watch a film and think its great but there are some people I wouldn’t recommend it to. When I thought about it a lot of people I know do come to movie for good movie advice. All I usually do is ask them what type of movies they like to watch, and what they are in the mood for. Then based on their answers I give then a few recommendations. My recommendations usually entail with me saying something along the line of if you like that film you like this one. Giving them options also leaves it for them to ultimately decide what they should watch. My most recent experience with this came this past week. Every Tuesday morning at work during our morning meeting I let the staff know of what has come out on that day for new movies and music. At first I just told them what had come out but I slowly started getting into mini reviews. Telling them about the films that are the must avoids, the ones that are the must sees and all the things in between. Then one day one of girls at customer service asked me what else had come out recently that was good b/c she had been renting films according to my morning reviews and she and her boyfriend were really digging them. She had told me that normally she’d ask the people working at the video store what was good, but now she’s coming to me. However the thing I really hate about recommending something is when they end up not liking it. It actually doesn’t happen that much (hence maybe it really is my niche) but it’s a real downer when it does happen. Another reason why I would suck at reviewing films is because I’d usually go off on some tangent about something in my life. It makes it fun for me and maybe the people who know me but if you didn’t know whom I was who gives a shit right. Plus I’ve also made a realization as to why I’m able to watch the same movies over and over again. It’s because my memory is shit. I have a great autobiographical memory, but when it comes to everything else it sucks. Therefore I’d also have to review a film pretty much right away before I start to forget what had happened in the film. For instance by just picking a random movie off my shelf like Gangs of New York I remember liking it, but I can’t remember most of the film. So when I do watch it again it’s almost like watching it for the first time. Of course that’s isn’t the case with every film for me. Plus the other great benefit of watching a film over again is each time you watch it you may discover something new, or by watching it in a different attitude can change your opinion. There has been films I remember loving when I first saw them, then watching them again later in life thinking they were horrible and vice versa.

So without anymore pointless crap onto my review of Watchmen. However, remember what I say about critics…they are full of shit, make up your own mind. Off the bat I would start with saying that if all you know about the film is what you’ve picked up from the trailer don’t waste your time b/c your not going to like it. This is a passion piece for fans of the comic, no one else need apply. Which actually is a real shame b/c it’s a great story with a fantastic philosophical undertone. Zach Synder could have changed things around to open it up more to a general audience but then those who the film is designed for would want his head on a stake. The general moviegoer will have seen this advertised and think to themselves ‘oh my, another superhero film’. It has been imbedded in their minds over the last ten yrs or so what a superhero film looks like. For those people they are going to be in for some disappointment. Just like Watchmen changed the face of comics, the film version continues the trend started with Batman Begins on how a comic book film is viewed. The benefit however for Batman is that it is a hell of a lot more recognizable than that of Watchmen. I have been sitting in anticipation for this film for some time now and I’ve already seen it twice.

When a movie comes out that I have been highly anticipating for a while it is a must that I see the first possible showing of it. For me that would have been the 4:30pm showing Friday afternoon. The first matinee showing on a Friday for the hottest films that come out are the best time to see them. Not a lot of people go and the ones who do are not the type of people who ruin the show by talking or doing something else that might be disrupting. Of course there is other reasons, for starters I really hate large grouping of people. People as a whole I can’t stand but as individuals there okay. I remember seeing Dark Knight the hottest film to come out in the last few years on it’s very first showing with hardly anyone in the theatre b/c I saw it on a Fri matinee. To my memory every showing after that was solid out for at least a solid week. I remember in the weeks leading up to the Watchmen even thinking I should’ve taken a personal business day. I’ve banked one of those days off and what else am I really ever going to use them for. Also what would be cooler than saying I got paid to go see Watchmen? Well…actually there probably is a lot cooler things but eh. Then a huge wrench was thrown into my plans just a half hour before I was going to check it out. One of my staff wasn’t aware that they were working that night. I tried my best to get coverage from anybody I could but options were limited b/c the rest of my staff were out of town or in school. I couldn’t leave one person on by themselves on a Friday night, so I decided to stay an extra 2 ½ hrs to help out. I them missed the showing I wanted to see. When I eventually got out of work the next showing was sold out so I was stuck seeing the late show. By that time I was just bitter, tired and my knees were killing me from standing all day. Thus I didn’t see it in under the best circumstances.

Upon first viewing I would give it a 3 out of 5. So what did I like…The opening credits sequence was fairly cool, getting people caught up on some back story and setting up how his slow motion action sequences will turn out. However for the non fan this might just seem too confusing. They do explain parts of the opening later in the film but it’s probably too late by then. Funny thing is the following day at work on the front page of the entertainment section in the news they give the back story for the novel to those people who haven’t read the book. That really speaks volumes right there if the paper has to do that right on the front page. The use of Bob Dylan’s The Times They Are A-Changin' was put to good use in the opening. Although I wish I could say the same about some of the other musical choices through out the film. They may be great songs on there own but used within the film seemed hoaky at times. Also seeing some of the pop cultural nods was pretty neat such as Studio 54 with David Bowie and Andy Warhol doing his signature characters of Watchmen. Even a picture of Batman pops up in the background, which I didn’t notice until my second viewing. I think my favourite character portrayed on screen turned out to be the Comedian. He is such an amoral character but his performance from Jeffery Dean Morgan was awesome. I think my favourite part of the film had to be Rorscach’s time in jail. This is also one of the only times in the film that his character is out of the mask. The historical sequences with Vietnam were also really cool. The production design was really sweet giving it a cool noirish feeling. If it had a flaw its that the comic has so much to offer it really is difficult to put it all into a friendly movie going experience. However this can be addressed in the ultimate directors cut. One of the biggest differences from the original source material was how the mass destruction took place. I remember a lot of fans out in arms when then heard the giant squid sequence was being replaced. Personally I thought the new ending worked great. I could even go as far as saying I liked it even more. Luckily the film sticks to it’s guns for the 18a rating, and doesn’t try to soften the violence so that a wider audience could see the film. There were a few funny things to point out from watching it with a crowd. One is the obvious blue dork flapping in the wind. Not a big shocker I though for the fans of the comic but those who never expect to see something like that made there snickers and comments to those sitting with them. The other thing I found was a little bit more werid. I got a general sense from the crowd that they felt it was wrong for Silk Spectre leaving Dr. Manhattan and ending up with Nite Owl. However Dr. Manhattan left his girlfriend to be with Silk Spectre. And she had even stuck it out with Dr. Manhattan after his accident. So it’s okay for the guys to still do that but not the women, Shenanigans!

I knew after seeing it for the first time my attitude did affect my overall opinion of the film, therefore I saw it again the very next night. Of course that’s not the only reason. I had plans to watch it again b/c I knew it would be one of those films that every time you watch it you experience something new each time. This time I also got to see it with two of my friends who knew nothing about the film other than what they saw from the trailer. After this viewing my rating of the film also went up. Now I give it a 4 out of 5. As for my friends they thought it was freakin’ boring. Which is what I honestly thought they were going to think of it. In conclusion if you’re a fan you probably thought it was cool. For the people who know nothing going into the film you going to have to pay close attention through out, and with it’s run time you will probably eventually give up. What these people should really watch is Warner’s release of Watchmen: The Motion Comic. I actually saw it before seeing the movie. It’s also a great refresher for someone with a poor memory like myself. What it is, is the original graphic novel with ever so slight animation to give it motion. It’s like the marvel cartoons of the 60’s or like listening to a book on tape. It’s 5 1/2 hours long and includes the full story. I would say it's also a must see for any fans of the novel. There, that's it...nothing more to say. Carry on with your lives

1000th Post!

This marks my 1000th post! Who knew I'd stick with this for so long :) Although there have been some spells of uneventful writing and I don't spend too much time talking about my boring life like I used to. It's actually a bit of a shame that I don't ramble on endlessly about my life b/c going back and reading some of the things I've written ocer the years makes for great entertainment. To mark my 1000th post why not show a new movie trailer. Top 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs

When I got up early this past Sunday to head out to the rifle range I was treated to part of VH1's Top 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs. I love specials like this one. They did interviews with a lot of the bands, commenting on whats makes the songs great and even update us on what some of the bands are up to currently. Gamey Gamers

A post I read today on geekologie has sparked the need for myself to make a comment. I made the observation to one of my merchandiser friends this morning that these last few days I've been bombarded with gamers who serious lack personal hygiene. And these people wonder why they don't have girlfriends or why people don't like them. As I'm talking to these people I'm consciously making the effort to back away from them. Gamers are cool people and pretty much now a days everyone is a gamer. Even the SOB's in high school who would pick on the geeks who were into games are gamers. These smelly people are however giving us a bad name again. If you want to vedge out at home playing games not showering go for it, I could care less. I've done it a few times myself. But if you plan on leaving the house and entering society please shower or at least throw on some deodorant! You may be fine with your own stink but don't make other people suffer! So what exactly sparked me making this comment? An online web site is selling PS3 controller soap. We should probably sell that at FS, I'm sure someone would buy it. LOL

Part Of Me

So I'm posting a link for the new music video from Chris Cornell called Part Of Me. It's the third video from his new album with Timbaland that hasn't even been released yet. The album just keeps being pushed back. Right know it's scheduled for a March 10th release. A lot of people I know think Chris Cornell is a sell out for making an album with Timbaland. At first I even thought what the hell are you doing Chris? But that wasn't going to stop me from giving it a chance. I think he's been around long enough and has established himself as a great musician that he can do whatever the hell he wants now. If it turns you off his music then that's your loss. It's complete different from anything else he has done and that's a great thing about it. I actually really dig the new stuff. And the man still Rocks! When I saw him in concert a couple months ago he totally kicked some ass. Since he wasn't touring with Timbaland and the crowd was there for some bitchin rock he took these new songs with an urban flavor and made them more rock for the audience. Call him a sell out if you like but he's still awesome in my books!

Desolation Row

One of my passions is movie music. Whether it be the score, actually songs made for the film, or old songs used to enhance the right moments. It can make the film going experience that much better. Then every time you hear that song you can be reminded of certain moments of a film. So on that note My Chemical Romance has made a song for the new Watchmen film called Desolation Row. Check out the link for the video. I'm not a My Chemical Romance fan but that usually doesn't matter. If a song is used for a movie it usually grows on me. It's the only new song for the film and from what I've read will only be used in the end credits. Since the film is a period piece they will be using some older songs through out the film. Rude Customer

Today I had a great situation where I got to be super assertive and treat a 50 year prick of a customer as if he were an undisciplined child. Rude customers are part of the business. They tend to happen namely b/c there are a lot of rude people in the world. But I believe in karma and they will eventually get theres. It's just more fun when your there to witness it. At work I never really get to deal with them it's always my associates who end up dealing with then and I miss out. I love dealing with then b/c I do it with such a big fuck you smile on my face. Today however I got my turn. So a big honking guy who had to hold himself with out fixtures, came into the store. And please don't take that as myself being mean to larger people I personally don't care what size a person is. Look at me for Christ sake I'm a goddamn twig. So the guy walks into my department props himself on my Wii games and yells out rudely a full aisle away from me if he can get some help, hoping that I will hear him. I however was clearly talking with another customer who had some questions about a Wii. Myself being very professionally acknowledged the rude customer and said I'm with another customer and will be with him in just a second. This of course wasn't good enough for him. He then waddled his ass closer and was talking to himself 'this is garbage... I want a little service but can't get". This just pissed me off so with my big fuck you grin my assertive voice I treat the guy like a 5 yr old kid with no manners and restate I'm with a another customer and I'll be with you in just a moment. I was only with my other customer for like 3 minutes and this guy just walks in expecting to be waited on hand and foot. The nerve of some people. I felt pretty good on how I dealt with things.

E! Top 50 Chick Flicks

For all you romantics out there why not start February out with E!’s top 50 Chick Flicks. Well I guess technically not all the films on the list could be described as romantic films but they mostly are. So as I wake up and nurse my slight hang over from last nights no pants party I manage to turn on the TV just in time to tune into the E! top 50 list. Oh cruel irony. I’ll end up sparking some type of comment with that, so I’ll just dive into it then post about other things later into the day so this post gets buried and think to myself that no one will ever read this knowing bloody well that probably isn’t true and now I’ll just add more crap to this sentence to make it one of the most longest run on sentence showing how horrible I am at grammar…lol. Okay are we off topic enough yet. Three of my female friends out of the blue make the comment that I would make the perfect boyfriend. Ouch the dagger in the heart…making me a Mr Right just not Mr Right now HAHA. That’s it next time I’m going to a party with only single people so I don’t have to hear these comments. Luckily I was still sober enough to leave the comment just at that. B/c then you can bring up if I’m so perfect why the hell have I’ve been single for years. Why’s that ladies? Please don’t really answer that it’s a rhetorical question. I know exactly why I’m single. B/c all you ladies are just plain crazy. Hehe, Now that I’ve offended all my female friends I’ll gracefully leave this comment and the comedic plight of my life. So I guess part of what would make their comment true would be b/c I like watching chick flicks. But remember I like all films and my favourite genre is Horror. What can be better than seeing some psycho slaughter a bunch of teenagers. And now with that comment I’m the creepy guy you don’t want to be around. Phew…dodged a bullet there. Out of the top 50 I’ve seen 37 of them and own 19 of them, which will probably grow once again over the next few years. Chick flicks usually represent female fantasy, and then all women wonder why they can’t find men like those in these films in real life. Well explain this to me then, most of these films are written and directed by men. Think about that next time you dream about that type of guy. We do exist but were all in hiding b/c your all nuts. Now that I’ve lost all my female friends, on with the list. I would have added a few different ones myself but that is either here nor there.

If U Seek Amy

I've had lot of things I've wanted to write about over the last week but I've just been to busy. Or too lazy...take your pick. But after reading this one article pertaining to a Britney Spears song I though I could spare a few minutes out of my busy life to do some pointless venting. So the issue is a parents group is protesting Britney Spears new song "If U Seek Amy". Why might you ask...get this, they say by saying the title phrase quickly out loud produces a sound akin to spelling out the F-word. Ooooh no the horror! You know what I say... Fah Q and Sofa King what! Try saying it a few times to yourself. I don't really even catch it and if they themselves didn't point it out I would never have even noticed. So they are urging radio stations not to broadcast it because they believe it "would violate the broadcast indecency law" if aired between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Give me a break people. You hear what you want to hear. Maybe the ones protesting the song need a good seeking of Amy. And what about song's such as Foxtrot, Uniform, Charlie, Kilo from Bloodhound Gang spelling out in call letters 'fuck'. Or songs like "Come On Eileen" from Dexys Midnight Runners. Where's your indecency issues with those songs eh? Get off your high horses.

Joking Around

Have you ever noticed that when you switch your relationship status on facebook from whatever it's currently at to a blank status it reports the person as no longer being in a relationship?

That was the basis for a great joke I got to play on my family and friends. And for those who are still left in the dark about what the hell is going on then this story is for you. So I guess it was back in the beginning of November, or end of Oct...something like that. Me and my friend Julie were talking online and the subject of relationships come up and I made the observation about what happens when you change your relationship status on facebook. When people do that they usually get a lot of concerned friends curious as to what happened. They want to know if you are okay, when all the person really wanted to do was no longer share with the world of facebook their relationship status. I haven't been in a relationship for quite some time, so this is where the lightbulds start flashing in our heads. We thought it would be funny if I changed it to in a relationship and see what type of responses I'd get. Let me tell you, it worked like a flippin charm. Exactly ten minutes after changing it my sister-in-law calls me wondering whats going on. Then not too long after that my oldest brother in Edmonton calls me and says his wife wants to talk to me. She too wanting to know what's happening. Funny how both my oldest brothers have to get their wives to prod me for details. I let them in on the joke of course but I'm not sure if my sisters-in-law thought it was too funny. Then my youngest brother posts that he has to find out everything through facebook. He however thought it was freakin genius. Then my close friends and some coworkers make comments trying to find out what's happening. Every time someone came up to me I couldn't help but laugh my ass off. Without going into any details my original joke also ended up having a secondary amusing property. My friend also said it would be a funny way to find out if I had made anyone jealous at work, which we think in fact happened. So after my few days of fun I couldn't just change my status back. What type of impression am I sending to those who don't know it's a joke yet if I can't stay in a relationship for more than a few days...hahaha. Then that's where I forgot all about it until my sister in law made a crack about if I was still in a relationship or not. So my joke lasted for about 2 months and I officially broke up with my fake girlfriend just before Christmas. This of course added even a new level of black humour by having a Christmas breakup for those who still weren't in on the joke. Two learns I picked up with this insightful joke. People shouldn't always trust what they read online, plus way too many people are interested in my love life...lol.

On a side note of playing practical jokes on people. I played a great one on my staff just the other day. Three of my employee's were hanging out in the front of the department while I was paged to customer service where there is another manager talking with two police officers. This was the reason I was called to the front. They all see me talking with the officers and they get back to work. A few minutes later I come back to the department with this real morose look on my face and hand one of them my set of keys mumbling "I knew New Years would catch up with me". They were all concerned and asked what's going on. I told them I'm being charged with drunkin assault and that they are here to take me to jail. The look on their faces was priceless, as I handed them my keys and walked back up to the front. My employee's were left in a state of shock as I walked away. Then I rounded a corner and came back and told them I was just fuckin with them. It's been a while since I laughed that hard. I had sold this thing brilliantly and they bought it hook line and sinker. If your curious the cops just wanted to let me know about a female stealing computer software around town.

Big Sugar

This past week at work I had myself another High Fidelity moment. With Christmas finally being over I've been able to switch things over from month long non-stop Christmas music to good old Rockin Roll. Not that I have a problem with Christmas music, most of the time your working so hard anyway you pretty much tune it out. However last year we actually had some interesting Christmas music such as Twisted Sister Christmas. This year was boring crap. We never even had an album with Rum DMC's Christmas in Hollis, now that's just disheartening. I read online about a James Brown Funky Christmas and even a Star Wars Christmas album, now if we had those to play in the store things might have been different. Okay so back to the story at hand. Being in charge is great b/c I get to pick the music that plays in store. And if your reading this Julie please don't take that last statement as me being against your music...lol. It's just great to have that power is all :) We have an endcap of greatest hit's CD's and one of them was a Big Sugar GH. I hadn't listening to them in a really long time and forgot how many great blues rock songs they had. So I made that one of choices for the store to play. Then over the course of a few days of playing it mixed with my other selections I've been getting compliments on my taste in music. However I bet for most people they were just making those comments b/c they were sick of hearing Christmas music. But here is where my high fidelity moment comes into play b/c by playing the Big Sugar album the quantity of that particular CD has gone done in numbers. It's cool to influence people...

On a side note about Big Sugar, one of my employee's asked me what ever happened to the band. I told them they broke up and the lead singer went on the form the band Grady. They promoted on their last tour that it would infact be their last, and unfortunately I missed it when they stopped by Kamloops. The funny thing is the day after I play that CD in the store I found out from my brother in Edmonton they were getting back together for a one night only New Year's performance backed by The Trews. That would have been a wicked show to have seen, oh well.

Garrett’s Best and Worst Films of 2008

Yeah, it’s time for another year to list my personal favourite and most hated films of the year. I think this is the one reason I stay in blogging b/c I love to make this year-end list. For those who’ve never read one before I list my favourite and most hated films of the year and sum my feeling up in one or two sentences. The best part is working on the worst films b/c I enjoy taking shots at them. I’ll admit for that for some of the films on my fav list they may not be great films but for some reason or another I enjoyed them. And for films on the worst list you may think I’m missing some and your right. The good news is I just didn’t waste my time with those films in the first place so I can’t include them if I haven’t seen them. Everything else I saw in theatres this year falls somewhere on the spectrum of good and bad.

The best and in no particular order.
The Bank Job-a cool 70’s heist throw back film
Charlie Bartlett-an extremely witty film, hence right up my ally.
Cloverfield- Some people out there didn’t like it but I thought it was freakin awesome.
The Dark Knight-do I really need to explain the awesomeness of this one
Definitely, Maybe-One of the better romantic films this year.
Doomsday-Now that’s what I call a fuckin’ show! This is a fantastic homage film to 80’s sci-fi/action films. It was so freakin’ cool I wanted to stay and watch another showing of it.
Felon: I think this film ended up skipping theatre, which is a real shame b/c it was pretty bad ass.
Get Smart-It’s hard to pull off site gags now a days and be funny but this one pulled it off nicely
In Bruges: Very Vulgar film…I couldn’t stop laughing
Iron Man: A comic book film with everything.
Role Models: Very funny film that doesn’t ruin all the jokes in the trailer
Sex Drive: Simple funny
Street Kings: gritty violence equals great film
Tropic Thunder: Brilliant
Indiana Jones: I think I was one of the only ones who had fun watching this one.

The worst and in no particular order
Babylon A.D.-Here’s basically the idea for this one-take great action scenes from other movies and role them into one, however tack on an 3rd act ending that is so bad it’s unwatchable. Don’t worry, even the director thought it was a shitty film.
Bangkok Dangerous-I think ever year Nic Cage puts out a movie where you always question the choice of his hair piece and this one is that film. I knew it was going to suck before I saw it and thought the same thing during and after the film. Normally I don’t pay to much attention to the cinematography of a film but it’s so bad with this film you can’t help but notice.
Beverly Hills Chihuahua-No…I never actually saw this film but come on…how can it not be on this list?
College -I regret ever seeing this film and contributing money to it. Not only was it stupid but I don’t think there was a single laugh in the whole theatre. These guy’s didn’t even try.
Death Race: Maybe if they stuck more to the original it may have been not half bad
The Happening: I usually like his films but come on!
Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay: A shitty sequel…Okay it did have two funny parts with the president and Neil Patrick Harris. In that case then they should have just made a movie with those two characters and left out Harold and Kumar.
Quarantine: Have you seen the poster? Yes, then save yourself two hours b/c you’ve already seen the film.
Leatherheads: Top stars apparently do not make top comedy.
The Love Guru: Why did I waste my time! I think the only reason I saw this b/c I thought JT would have some performance stealing scenes…NO!
Righteous Kill: You know the whole film in the first 5 minutes. I expect better from you Pacino and DeNiro
X Files 2: I have one word to describe this film-Boring!
Max Payne: Wasn’t this suppose to be an action film? B/c I didn’t see any till the third act. Don’t worry even the original game creators thought this movie sucked.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor: Don’t even get me started on how much I hated this film. I felt like walking out so many times.

Holiday Shopping Guides

Each year around this time the guys over at Aint it Cool News post their annual Holiday Shopping guides covering great geekdom gifts. Migraine

For the first time ever in my working carrer I went home sick. I have a great work ethic; that in my mind is hard to come by these days. I show up to every shift no matter how crappy or sick I'm feeling. Basically I'll always show up short of being in the hospital. But even then I'm sure I'd try to make it in. Today I woke up to a killer migraine at 4am. I scheduled myself for 6am to work but decided to go in for 7 instead to get two more hours of sleep hoping that it would go away. When I did get up it was still kicking around but wasn't too bad. I've felt this way a few times at work and usually with some meditation, water and a shit load of pills it goes away by the afternoon. Instead of it getting better it progressivly got worse. I was going to stick it through to the end of my shift like I usually do but I feel now with my role in the company that it probably isn't healthy to do that anymore. So actually much to my dismay I decided to go home. I only had 3hrs left on my shift anyway and the morning rush came and went with ease. Plus I felt I leaving my staff in a good position for the day so I didn't feel all that bad for leaving. Then I went home and have slept most of the day but the pain is still lingering as of this moment. I couldn't continue just lying in my bed which I normally would enjoy, so I though I would do some blogging and get caught on the events in the world. After reading some of the news I probably should have just stayed in bed. Did anyone hear about the Walmart employee who was trampled to death in Long Island? People as a whole disgust me. “Come on people now, smile on your brother. Everybody get together try to love one another right now.“

Hancock

Sony what the hell are you doing? Someone really needs to get canned at Sony's home video marketing. Next week Will Smith's summer blockbuster Hancock gets released. I really enjoyed this film and gave it 4 G's out of 5. I said it was really sweet in a kind hearted way. Now onto my issue. First off whenever Sony releases a film on DVD they always have a habit of changing the poster image for the video release. Usually it's a real horrible change and they should've just stuck with whatever sweet poster campaign they had for the theatrical release. However in this case I could see a need for a change from the close-up of Smith's face. So this time around they include Charlize Theron as well. So far so good. However here in lies the issue...

minor spoiler alert if you have seen the film or don't care about a minor spoiler alert keep on reading.....

When you first watch the film Will Smith is the only one of his kind. Part of the surprise that builds the third act of the film is the fact that Charlize Theron's character; the wife of the public relations professional who's trying to repair Hancock's image, is in fact a superhero herself. So for the DVD release they plaster that image on the front putting her in black spandex and a cape. From that image however you could get the impression that she may even be the villain. If your not too observant you may not think too much of that image and be none the wiser. However as I was watching Captain America on teletoon last night they were constantly promoting the release with TV spots. In these TV spots all they do is clearly point out the fact that she is indeed a superhero. Why kill this surprise? It would have been better to stick with the original ads promoting a superhero who does more damage than good. A bunch of idiots they are.

What I'm Currently Listening To

Maybe this at another attempt at getting back into blogging...then again maybe not. Although technically I've never actually stopped I just quit putting any effort into it. Why then with a possible a resurgence? My friend who is on maternity leave (Hi Julie...cause I know you'll be reading this sometime)was bored so I suggested looking at my blog. Of course I wasn't thinking at the time and remembered that some of the things I wrote were quite candid. Not that I minded people reading them; hell if didn't want people reading them I wouldn't have put them out there in the first place. However only strangers were reading them back then. After 3 years how the hell am I suppose to remember all the stupid stuff I've said, so knowing she was getting caught up on my life, I had to give myself a refresher course, which I actually got quizzed on. It was actually quite fun for myself to go back and read some of the stuff I wrote. It really did make for some good entertainment. For those who are bored I suggest you do the same and get a laugh at my expensive...haha. Plus Julie catered to my ego and said I was a talented writer, and really that's all it takes to dive right back in ;)

One of the things I used to post about was mix CD's. I love making mix CD's and have a certain formula to then. See if you can guess as to what the formula is...Or go look it up on an older post. It does include a funny story.

So Chris Cornell's new album is produced by Timbaland. When I first heard that I was like what the fuck? You don't mix those two together.... Well.... these tracks have sort of grown on me. They're actually pretty freakin good, but only time will tell if the whole album is good. It has been delayed month after month and we're not likely to see it now until Feb next year. If you were to sample one I'd suggest 'Scream', it's my favorite out of the three.

4. Jack White & Alicia Keys-Another Way to Die (from Quantum of Solace)

The first ever duet for a James Bond movie. If your not a fan of the song itself try hearing it to the opening of the film it's makes it bad ass. And thankfully they didn't go with a song from Amy Winehouse. Have you seen that girl recently?....Trainwreck!

Chris Cornell

As an early birthday gift my brother and sister in law got me front row tickets to Chris Cornell. I've been to a lot of concerts and this has to rate up there as one of my favorites. And not b/c I was front row; although that was part of it. I've been front row many a times for concerts. It's was one of my favorites just from the stories from the night.

Mobile was the opener. I saw then a few years ago with Theory of a Deadman and Three Days Grace. They have some really good songs. After their show they said they were going to be doing a meet and greet at the merch stand. So I was like hells yeah I'm meeting the band. So I bought me a Mobile hoodie and their new CD to get them to sign it. I thought afterward I could have just got them to sign my ticket, but I wanted there CD anyways and it was cheaper than what I could get it for at work. I also smuggled my camera in so I got to get a picture with the lead singer and one of the guitarist.

They always say on the ticket no cameras but I thought to hell with it I'll risk it. Who really cares now a days with all the cell phone cameras. My camera is basically a piece of shit now a days any way, so I really didn't care if it was lost, stolen or confiscated. However I wasn't patted down plus I knew the girl doing security checks anyways.

Now on to Chris Cornell. This was the second time I've got to see him live. The last time was 05 when he was fronting Audioslave. Once again another bitchin concert. Since his new album has been delayed till next year he only played about 3 of his new songs. His new album is produced by Timbaland. It's taken a little bit but I have warmed up to his new tunes and think they are pretty good. The rest of his set was composed of a perfect mix of Audioslave, Soundgarden, and his solo work (stuff before and after Audioslave). He even threw in a Temple of The Dog song (Hunger Strike) and a Led Zepplin song (Immigrant Song). The funny thing about the latter was he had the words taped to the stage for reference. He also did three songs in acoustic. So being front row I got some sweet pics, got to grab his hand, and scored two guitar picks with his insignia on them. My brother and sis scored like 5 between them. They were throwing out tons of picks. They were even having pick wars between the members of his band. It was pretty freaking cool. During one of his last songs two people from the crowd actually jumped on stage and danced around. Chris was pretty cool about. ROCK ON!

World's first blue roses after 20 years of research.

Blue roses have been available in florists in recent years but until now, they have been created by using various dying techniques to stain the petals of naturally white roses. Now researchers have created a genetically-modified blue rose which have been implanted with a gene that simulates the synthesis of blue pigment in pansies. Cool, but sort of a waste of 20 years just create a blue rose that grows itself.

I now also have new meanings for my tattoo. I know what it means to me but after I got it done I tried looking up to see what a general meaning of it meant. I never truly came up with anything. Now according to this article a blue rose has long been synonymous with the unattainable, from signifying unrequited love in Chinese folklore to its Victorian era connotations of symbolising a quest for the impossible. It's weird that in a way that this is actually part of the true meaning to myself. Freaky

Can you survive The Outbreak!

This is something your going to want to check out it's pretty freakin sweet! Chris and Lynn Lund of Portland, Oregon web design-and-animation studio SilkTricky have put together an interactive choose your own adventure style zombie short film called The Outbreak. That's right you watch this zombie outbreak video and at certain points you decide what the character should do and the film advances based on your decisions. They've actually done a really great job with it. However it did get annoying after a while making all the wrong choices. I've read the zombie survival guide, I've seen all the best zombie films. I should have aced this...lol. At least in my movie those things would have worked. Anyway give it a try you'll get kick out of it.

Dead Rising-On the Wii!

I may just have to invest in a Wii this winter because my favorite game of all time the bad ass zombie killing game Dead Rising is coming out. Which in a way is a little surprising considering they had to stop making it on the 360 due to a legal battle over similarities with the original Dawn of the Dead. I never thought I'd buy a Wii but I have every other system so I may as well get this one too. The pro and cons however. The game is basically the 360 verison but on the Wii. Actually it's more of a toned down version but not in the sense of violence. For instance I've read you can't take snapshots (who could resist taking pics of a zombie women in some erotic state..lol). They have removed the 72hr time limit. Due to the wii's limited horsepower the graphics are toned down plus the zombie numbers have dwindled. And finally they have cut back on the number of everyday objects you could use to beat a zombie's ass. But they have thrown in some new enemy's and a better way to save your progress. But the main reason I'd think I'll have to pick it up is the game play. Who wouldn't love to do the motions of ramming a chainsaw through a zombie or taking a swing and cracking a bat over a zombie's head. That is going to be the true appeal for me with this one. But once I'm done playing the game it's just going to be another system that sits on the shelf being unplayed. However I may have to get into the bowling game, but if it throws off my real game I'm going to be pissed...lol

Ben X

Here's a movie that you might want to keep an eye on, it called Ben X. I bought myself Charlie Bartlett (which is now part of my top films of 08'. Speaking of which this has and is going to be a great month for top films on my list. I just saw 'In Bruges' and it made it to the the list, then I just saw Charlie Bartlett and it jumped to the list and nearing the end of the month I get my personally fav 'Doomsday' released on bluray-more on that one later). Back to the topic at hand...one of the trailers was for a Belgium film 'BenX'. It's about an autistic boy who retreats into the fantasy world of the MMORPG ArchLord to escape bullying. The trailer actually made it look really cool. It's based on a book "Nothing is all he said" by Nic Balthazar, which was inspired by the true story of an autistic boy who committed suicide because of bullying. Check out the trailer here. There's no date for the DVD yet but if it looks as good to you as it does to me keep an eye out for it.

Dawn of the Dead 3D

This past week or so has brought some cool news about my favorite film. I've read that last yr Nike had plans to release a shoe inspired by the film, but it was never released. However with the recent crop of pics of horror inspired shoes being released hopefully they will come out this yr. Fingers crossed on my part. In Kevin Smith's new film "Zack and Miri make a Porno" they have a hockey team named the Monroeville Zombies. If you know the movie you know the reference. Hopefully Smith will release the jersey's to buy at his store. Then I read this summer for the first time ever there will be a screening of the movie inside the actual mall where the movie was shot. One day I want to visit that mall and this would have been the best time to do that. Now I find out today they have announced plans to re-release Dawn of the Dead back in theatres. This time in 3D! I don't care if it's some type of gimmick or money grab I have to see that and I will travel to the States if that is the only way I'm able to see it. But that's not it...they also have plans for a direct sequel. Do we really need one? No but who cares. It's still pretty cool.

Here's a movie recomendation for you all. It's from the director of Pump of the Volume and Empire Records. It's about 3 junkies, a satanic cult, dwarfs, and a robbery. It's a quirky Canadian independent black comedy with a killer soundtrack. Check out the trailer and if that makes you want to see it...go out and rent it.
