Smokin Aces

4 G's out of 5. This movie was awesome in the way a film like Snatch is awesome. It's one the critics don't understand but the audience can love. It had great violence, off beat characters and even a great story. The only flaw was it just wouldn't end. It felt like I was watching the multiple ending to the Return of the King.

An interesting thing happened to me on the way home. As I was driving I came upon the scene of a car accident. It had happened only seconds before I arrived. I was the second person upon the scene and luckily I had my cell phone with me so I was able to call the paramedics. It was a single vehicle accident and it looked like the driver had lost control and slammed head first into the cement barricade causing the vehicle to do a complete 180. He was dazed and bleeding from the head. Once the paramedics arrived he was able to get out of the car on his own strength through the passenger door. Luckily the accident looked a lot worse than it really was. Before I left one of the officers told me the driver would be fine.

Ow!

I'm having a really painful day. I was called into work at the hotel to move some furniture. As I was carrying a table through a doorway the leg of the table caught the side of the door causing the table to sock me right in the jaw. I think I may have dislocated my jaw or something. It hurts when I have to move my jaw around. It feels like I've been going down on a women for 24hours straight. However if that was the cause I don't think I'd be complaining...LOL.

Catch and Release

Meh. I didn't really care for this film. Not that is was atrociously bad or something. I'm not sure what it was. Maybe there was too much going on, or maybe I just couldn't connect with the film in any way. It's a shame b/c I was really hoping to enjoy this one. I remember seeing the trailer for this one last fall and thought it looked awesome. Surprisingly I didn't really care for Kevin Smith in his role. From the trailer it looked like he was going to be good in the role. I don't really know what else to say. The funny thing is I'll probably still end up buying it when it comes out on DVD.

If you head over to the Pearl Jam's Myspace page you can hear their awesome cover of The Who's 'Love Reign O'er Me". This song is also featured in the trailer for the new Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle drama 'Reign Over Me'.

The Hitcher

3.5 G's out of 5. I thought it was a fairly good remake. It wasn't a shot for shot remake and it wasn't a complete reimaging of the story. It was what a remake should be-similar yet different. I think my favorite scene in the movie had to be the car chase. Why? b/c they used the song 'Closer to God' by NIN. The moment it started playing a huge smile came to my face, it just fit so well. I think by using this song I liked the film a lot more. Without it I may have given it a weaker rating. It was also interesting that they using a David Gray song in a horror film. The only real improvement from the original was the gore, especially one scene. In the original they completely cut away. In this one they show everything.

Hinder

Supposedly Friday night Hinder stopped by my Future Shop to do some shopping. They were there for like 2 hours. It sucks that I worked that morning and not that night. Not that I'm a big fan of Hinder, but it still would have been to meet them. The funny thing that I heard is most people working that night hadn't even heard of them.

A Moment

Today at FS I had a true 'High Fidelity' moment. If you've ever seen this movie there is a scene where John Cusack's character says "I will now sell four copies of "The Three EPs" by The Beta Band". He then plays the song 'Dry the Rain' by The Beta Band. Then a customer asks "Who is this?" and John says it's The Beta Band and the customer says "Their good" and John replies "I know".

While working I played the album 'Reconstruction Site" by The Weakerthans. After the first song I had some guy interested in who was playing. I almost got the guy to buy it but he didn't want to pay the 21.99 selling price. I just think it was cool that I put on a somewhat obscure Canadian band and had someone inquiry about them.

The Holiday

Yes, I'm going to give this movie my top honor.... 5 G's out of 5. It was a really great fun and sweet film. It was in it's last week at the Cineplex and I'm glad I got a chance to check it out on the big screen before it was too late. It had great characters and great acting by all. Jude Law was finally a nice guy that is likable. I really liked his character. One element of the film I enjoyed was it's connection to three of the things I enjoy in life...film, music and literature. Each of the main characters profession had some connection with these elements. Therefore I felt some type of connection with each of these characters. Kate Winslet's character befriends an elderly man who used to be a big time film writer back in the day. It would be so cool to know someone like that in real life. If there was one era I could relive, it would be Hollywood in the thirties. Diaz's character in the film puts together film trailers. There was actually a faux trailer in the film that actually had Lindsay Lohan and James Franco in it. However I think I may have been the only one in the theatre who thought that it was funny. I was also envious of Diaz's character house. At least one part of it. She had a wall of DVD's surrounding a huge television with surround sound. This is the exact type of set up I want for my own place. The funny thing is I probably have just about the same amount of movies as her character. The film also had some great tunes. They used 'Let Go' by Frou Frou which has been previously used in Garden State, but then they also used a song called 'just for now' which is sung by Imogen Heap who also is the vocalist for Frou Frou. I'm going to have to find a copy of this song to download. If it's not already too late to check this one out do so. It would also make for a great date movie.

You scored as Jigsaw. You are Jigsaw. You dont enjoy killing people at all. You instead love to see how far people will go to live. However if it ends in a bloody death, you still sleep with a smile on your face. You are intelligent, and know how to outwit just about anyone. And that spells bad news for anyone who falls into your games of death and torture.

"If it's secret and elite, it can't be good" The Skulls

2.5 G's out of 5. I personally didn't care for this film, but that's not to say that it was a bad. I had really wanted to see it but once in the theatre I just didn't care about what was going on. That probably affected my overall enjoyment of the film. It may be something that I'll have to check out again hopefully more interested in wanting to watch it. One part of the film I did enjoy was the bits about the secret society Skull and Bones. The film 'The Skulls' was based upon this secret society. The acting was also top notch. Matt Damon did a terrific job portraying hardly any emotions through out. If your interested in how the CIA came about then you'll find something you'll enjoy about the film. If not, then avoid sitting through this nearly 3 hour film.

Idiocracy

3.5 G’s out of 5. Released under the radar this past Tuesday on DVD was the new film from Office Space and Beavis & Butthead creator Mike Judge. If you’ve never heard anything about it don’t feel left out, most people didn’t. It stars Luke Wilson as an average guy who is used as a genuine pig for a scientific experiment, which would place him in hibernation for 1 year. Things go wrong and he wakes up 500 years later to an incredibly downed down society where he is now the smartest man on Earth. Now if that plot doesn’t make you want to see the film I don’t know what will. It only saw a limited theatical run last September with Toronto being the only place in Canada it was shown. The film’s distributor did absolutely nothing to even promote the film. If it had been given a wide release it probably would have made some buck. If not in America then definitly in Canada. It’s hard not to see America heading in this direction. Luke’s character should have tried moving up North, it probably wouldn’t have been as bad below the border. The film had some pretty good laughs and if you’re a fan of Judge’s work then it’s definiantly something you’ll want to check out. My recommendation is to watch it with a large group of people. It would make for a greater viewing experience sharing in the stupidty of mankind. Not releasing it on such a wide scale however will most definitly help secure a cult status for the film. The film sold out at Future Shop the day of it’s release. We only got about 10 copies or so but they were all gone in about 5 hours. Luckily I was smart enough to put my copy on hold till I got off work.

The Tragically Hip

Last night I got to see my first Tragically Hip concert. The last time they came to Kamloops was back in 95 and I was in grade 6 or 7. I remember wanting to go back then but for some reason didn’t. Probably having no money back then was a factor. However my oldest brother did go. While it may have been my first it was my brothers fiancée’s 13th time. She is a huge fan of theirs. B/c she is a member of The Tragically Hip fan club we got access to tickets a week before the public could get their hands on tickets. We ended up with third row, but managed to get front row. We even had better seats than the hosts of our local radio stations. The first three rows were blocked off, so you needed to get wristbands if you were sitting there. We were sitting in just the right spot where once the Hip got on stage we could rush up to the barricade. Which is of course what we did so our third row tickets became front row. I’ve now been front row for three concerts, the other two being Matthew Good and Evanescence. The security was quite picky on who were allowed in this section. Many times people would hope over the third row into the section and the security would nail their ass. I guess I have a forgettable face b/c they wanted to check that I had a wristband on three different occasions, which was weird b/c I never really moved once I was up front. While the security was top notch up front it was lacking getting in. They weren’t doing any pat downs. You could just walk in. This is the first concert I’ve been to where this has happened. All I noticed was if you brought in a backpack they wanted to look in it and that was it.

As for the show it was fucking awesome. I can’t remember ever really being disappointed from a concert anyway. The opener was The Sadies. I didn’t really care for them but that’s not to say they were wretched. Dowine put on quite the show for the audience. He even dances around the stage more than Eddie Vedder. During Fully Completely he was playing around with the mike stand lots kicking it, and bopping it off his body. It was pretty fucking cool. He was also quite animated with his face and hands, making smoking gestures and doing other antics. They performed a great mix of their songs. It was pretty cool getting to hear New Orleans is Sinking live. I think my favourite song of theirs is Nautical Disaster, but they didn’t play it this time around. It made for a great kick start to the concert season of 07.
Flash Back

Back in 2000 my g/f and I were watching Much Music and they premiered a video by
Detroit Grand Pubahs called Sandwiches. After watching it we were like what the hell did we just witness. It then became an inside joke between us. Whenever one of us would start singing it we would crack the other person up. I had almost forgot about the song until my younger brother started singing it last night, so I thought I’d share it with my blogger friends.

“We can make sandwiches……..Out here on the dance floor”

Game Plan

-Manage a record store by the time I’m 30.
-Own my own record store by the time I’m 40.
And if I find the time maybe I’ll fit in a wife and a few kids. HEHE

I’ve been giving more and more thought to owning my own store. At first I thought I wouldn’t last more than 6 months b/c I couldn’t sell movies at Wal-Mart prices but I’ve recently thought of a few ways around at. I’ve even thought of a few names for my place. The most obvious would be G’s spot, but I’m not so sure about the sexual innuendo. Then I thought “Share My Passion”, but upon further thought it was sort of gay. Other cool names Betamax or Reel-to-Reel. I would sell movies and music, but then I would also sell cool movie and music related merchandise like shirts, posters, and toys. There is so much cool shit I’ve only ever seen online and I’d love to put it all in store. So there are the next 16 or so years of my life mapped out. I guess I haven’t lost my ambition after all.

The Star Wars Holiday Special

Every fanboy has heard about the existence of this show, but for those who are still clueless it's a Christmas Special that aired back in 78' about Chewie and Han Solo trying to get home to Chewie's family, so they can celebrate Lifeday. It was a two hour special featuring all the cast members from the film. It was so bad it was only aired once. George Lucas has even said he would love to track down every copy in existence and destroy them. Bootleg copies have been circulating for years online. I've never seen it in full b/c the copy I had was poor quality. For those who are interested go check out on edited down version on Youtube.

Hang the Bastard!

"It's been six weeks since Saddam Hussein was killed by a pack of wild boars and the world is still glad to be rid of him. "

The world probably should have paid attention to the South Park movie before killing Saddam b/c I bet he's screwing Satan right now and coming up with a plan to come back to Earth. I love the guys behind South Park. They are comical geniuses.

I Can Change-performed by Saddam from South Park.
Hang the Bastard- Saddam's hanging set to the muscial number from Cannibal the Musical. I'm glad there was at least one other sick person to come up with this idea.
You can also check out the original musical number from the film.
