Relay For Life
Yesterday I competed in the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay For Life. It's a 12 hr community event to celebrate survivorship and raise money for cancer research. About a month or so ago FS put a team together to compete and asked whether I would like to participate. I thought it would be very nice to be apart of something like this so I signed up. Initially I though they just needed people who were willing to walk, run, or jog for 12 hrs. Then I realised I would have to collect donations. This is something I've never liked doing ever since I was in elementary school and beavers. I personally just don't like asking people for money, even if it is for a good cause. I don't mind others asking but it's something very hard for me to do. On the other hand I don't mind giving money out when it is for a good cause. Each member of our team had a $100 goal for donation's. I decided to just donate the goal myself. I also got my parents to donate so I could hit over my goal.
It was quite the long day for me b/c before I made it to the track I completed an 8 hr shift. The weather wasn't perfect but if it had been all sunny and hot it would have really sucked. I had originally thought I'd have to be walking around a track for 12 hrs. However this wasn't the case, even though I would have been up for it. I think I was only on the track for half the time I was there. Besides the walk, other small activities were held. One of them was an origami competition. I was sort of the ringer for the team. Origami was something I was really into as a kid. In elementary school I even got to teach my class how to make some. I used to remember how to make quite a few complex designs. Through the years it dropped down to only two; a frog and a lily. Then it was only the flower I remembered. I hadn't done one in so long that I completely forgot how to even make that one. While walking around the track I tried constructing one. It was really frustrating that I couldn't figure it out. I promised to keep walking the track until I figured it out. Three hours later I had one completed. There was one crucial step that I just couldn't remember. I'd like to think it wouldn't have taken me that long if I hadn't been walking while doing it. When the competition began the participants had to make a crane. I figured that is what we'd have to make since that is the most famous origami design. It would have been smart if I would've been practicing that ahead of time. The cold had really swollen my hands by then thus making folding paper extremely difficult. Plus the instructions for folding the Crane were really bad. Most people either gave up or ended up folding airplanes. After a quick attempt I chose just to fold the flower, but once again I forgot what the crucial step was, thankfully it didn't take me no 3 hours to remember it this time. No one was able to make the Crane and I handed in my much more impressive flower. In order to take the dullness out of running they had theme laps. One of them was a limbo lap. I can't remember the last time I even tried doing limbo. My team was quite shocked how low I could go. I was quite shocked myself to tell you the truth. They also had live entertainment. One of the shows was Can Can dancing. Damn those girls were hot. It made me regret not going to any Can Can shows while I was in Paris. Even though it was a long day it was extremely fun. I glad I got to participate in such an important cause. I also liked the fact that while walking I got to know my fellow associates a lot better.
