The Tragically Hip

Last night I got to see my first Tragically Hip concert. The last time they came to Kamloops was back in 95 and I was in grade 6 or 7. I remember wanting to go back then but for some reason didn’t. Probably having no money back then was a factor. However my oldest brother did go. While it may have been my first it was my brothers fiancée’s 13th time. She is a huge fan of theirs. B/c she is a member of The Tragically Hip fan club we got access to tickets a week before the public could get their hands on tickets. We ended up with third row, but managed to get front row. We even had better seats than the hosts of our local radio stations. The first three rows were blocked off, so you needed to get wristbands if you were sitting there. We were sitting in just the right spot where once the Hip got on stage we could rush up to the barricade. Which is of course what we did so our third row tickets became front row. I’ve now been front row for three concerts, the other two being Matthew Good and Evanescence. The security was quite picky on who were allowed in this section. Many times people would hope over the third row into the section and the security would nail their ass. I guess I have a forgettable face b/c they wanted to check that I had a wristband on three different occasions, which was weird b/c I never really moved once I was up front. While the security was top notch up front it was lacking getting in. They weren’t doing any pat downs. You could just walk in. This is the first concert I’ve been to where this has happened. All I noticed was if you brought in a backpack they wanted to look in it and that was it.

As for the show it was fucking awesome. I can’t remember ever really being disappointed from a concert anyway. The opener was The Sadies. I didn’t really care for them but that’s not to say they were wretched. Dowine put on quite the show for the audience. He even dances around the stage more than Eddie Vedder. During Fully Completely he was playing around with the mike stand lots kicking it, and bopping it off his body. It was pretty fucking cool. He was also quite animated with his face and hands, making smoking gestures and doing other antics. They performed a great mix of their songs. It was pretty cool getting to hear New Orleans is Sinking live. I think my favourite song of theirs is Nautical Disaster, but they didn’t play it this time around. It made for a great kick start to the concert season of 07.
