Idiocracy

3.5 G’s out of 5. Released under the radar this past Tuesday on DVD was the new film from Office Space and Beavis & Butthead creator Mike Judge. If you’ve never heard anything about it don’t feel left out, most people didn’t. It stars Luke Wilson as an average guy who is used as a genuine pig for a scientific experiment, which would place him in hibernation for 1 year. Things go wrong and he wakes up 500 years later to an incredibly downed down society where he is now the smartest man on Earth. Now if that plot doesn’t make you want to see the film I don’t know what will. It only saw a limited theatical run last September with Toronto being the only place in Canada it was shown. The film’s distributor did absolutely nothing to even promote the film. If it had been given a wide release it probably would have made some buck. If not in America then definitly in Canada. It’s hard not to see America heading in this direction. Luke’s character should have tried moving up North, it probably wouldn’t have been as bad below the border. The film had some pretty good laughs and if you’re a fan of Judge’s work then it’s definiantly something you’ll want to check out. My recommendation is to watch it with a large group of people. It would make for a greater viewing experience sharing in the stupidty of mankind. Not releasing it on such a wide scale however will most definitly help secure a cult status for the film. The film sold out at Future Shop the day of it’s release. We only got about 10 copies or so but they were all gone in about 5 hours. Luckily I was smart enough to put my copy on hold till I got off work.
